So I ended up staying on his side of the stage that night.

Somehow he got past my security to my dressing room after the show.

His name was Pat.

He told me how much he enjoyed my act and that he'd always wanted to meet me.

As we stood chatting there in the doorway,

I got the feeling he wanted me to invite him in,

or maybe that was my own idea.

But I've always made it a rule not to get involved with my fans.

He said he had to catch a plane back to New York.

He thanked me for my time and said good night.

I expected him to return again the next night.

I was right.

He came to my room after the show with flowers and candy.

He had flown back in from New York just to see me, but he had to return on a midnight flight.

So, for a couple of hours, we had fun, just talking and laughing.

And when he left, he didn't tell me he would come back, but I had a feeling he would.

I was right.

He came to my dressing room with champagne and roses.

I realized that he was the sweetest man I'd ever met.
