The whole villain starter kit 101.
The US wasn't about to let it happen.
In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made a bold move.
He signed a deal with Denmark to protect Greenland
from German influence.
And by protect, Roosevelt meant build military bases
all over the place.
This wasn't a real estate purchase,
but it was the next best thing.
Denmark technically still owned it,
but the US could do whatever it needed for defense.
After World War II, Greenland wasn't going back
to just being that place where it's really cold.
The Cold War turned it into a prime location
for early warning radar systems
because the Arctic was a potential route
for Soviet continued *******.
In 1951, the US and Denmark expanded
their defense agreement,
allowing American military operations
to continue in Greenland.
Since then, the deal has been updated periodically
with the most recent provision in 2004.
While Greenland isn't American soil by any means,
the US has been camping out there for decades.
Check out my recent video on "Finds in the Ice"
to learn about Camp Century and the nuclear funhouse
the US military built under Greenland in the Cold War.
Trump's whole idea to buy Greenland isn't quite as new
or as unprecedented as a lot of people think.
