We grew up together.

I got out of town and headed to the nearest big city as soon as I graduated.

Vernon joined up with the Marines.

I was surprised when I got his note. He said he was out of the service, back in the hollow,

and doing what he always said he was going to do. That's when I decided to go back south

myself, just for a visit, just to see how he was doing.

This is about as far north as any of us usually got.

Hope that fire didn't get too close.
